Snow Kisses

“I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently? And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says, "Go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.” {Lewis Carroll, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass}

White Space

White Space

In the mist between sleep and wake

in the moment before breathe

in the pause before the thought

before the word

in the white space between the words

between the letters and punctuation

in the white space

where I can listen carefully

where I can speak slowly

where I can fall into backwards

into something

in the white space

I feel your strong hand thrust my face, my head into the water

I feel myself plunging in

just when I think I'll suffocate

you pull me, dripping, back out.
